Put your older/extra computer hardware to good use

Thanks to everyone's support, the Austin Install Fest was a huge success.

For those of you in Austin

The Austin-based HeliOS Project distributes computers to central Texas children year round.

If you have computers or parts to donate, they'll make sure that they are put to good use. To date, HeliOS has distributed almost 1000 computers.

What hardware can HeliOS use?

Although Linux itself will boot and work fine on a slower machine with much less memory, kids need computers that meet the below requirements to view videos and perhaps do some video editing of their own. This would allow kids to view just about any web page necessary (including those infused with Flash), play music, do homework and other research, do basic graphics editing, and the like.

Specific hardware needs:

LCD Monitors (We already have a surplus of CRTs)
USB Thumbdrives
Computers with the following specs:
Ram: 512 minimum, preferably 1GB
Processor: AMD 2200+ or Intel Pentuim III 900 mghtz or better
Harddrive: 40 gigs
Video: preferably cards 3D video/GL capabilities -- Both Intel chipsets as well as the Nvidia or ATI cards.

Can HeliOS use Apples/Macs?

While we can accept Macs, we prefer machines on which we can install Ubuntu linux and similar variants. By having a standard OS and set of applications on the computers, it makes it easier to provide support and service to the recipients.

Can HeliOS use Laptops?

Yes, and the requirements for laptops are more liberal than desktops. If you are not sure of the age or specs of your laptop, contact Ken Starks with the model number of your laptop, and we'll be happy to check the tech specs, and let you know whether we can use it.
